The health and safety rules set by principal contractors often extend beyond the RAMS pack we provide. These rules may include policies related to lone workers or equality and diversity, which we do not cover in our pack.

Carpet fitting is considered a safer trade than most sectors in the construction industry as there is very little work at height, and most asbestos-containing materials, such as floor tiles and floor adhesives, are considered a lower risk than Aertex, asbestos insulation, and cement-based products.

Slips, trips and falls at the same level and manual handling injuries are significant hazards, with cuts and grazes from knife blades and carpet grippers also being common.

Musculoskeletal complaints can occur from carrying out manual tasks such as using knee kickers and low-level working positions, and the risk of occupational diseases, including dermatitis from chemical contact and respiratory disease from dust inhalation, is relatively common.

Although RSIs, hearing loss and vision impairment are risks from using power tools, the average time a carpet fitter spends using these is relatively low.

Formal training can be provided to your staff in several ways. You may send them to a training centre, invite training providers to your premises, or opt for online training courses. These options are particularly beneficial for courses such as manual handling and slips, trips, and falls, which are relevant to your trade.

Less formal training can often be more practical for specific sites. This type of training allows you to communicate site rules, safe working practices, and expectations for staff on particular sites. You can use toolbox talks, safety fliers, posters, or site inductions to convey these messages effectively.
